The drama intensified on Wednesday as UEFA delivered a definitive blow to Benfica’s hopes. The governing body officially rejected the Portuguese club’s appeal against Gianluca Prestianni’s provisional one-match suspension, meaning the controversial winger will miss the decisive Champions League playoff second leg against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu—a match that could determine one club’s continental future.

What Happened in the First Leg?

The controversy erupted during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory at Estadio da Luz on February 17. After Vinícius Jr. scored, an altercation with Prestianni allegedly involved racist language, with Kylian Mbappé claiming he heard Prestianni refer to Vinícius Jr. as a “monkey” five times. The match was halted for 10 minutes as UEFA’s anti-racism protocol was activated.

The Disciplinary Timeline

Date	Event
Feb 17	Alleged racial abuse during first leg
Feb 23	UEFA issues provisional one-match ban
Feb 25	UEFA rejects Benfica’s appeal
Potential Outcome	Minimum 10-game ban if found guilty
Match Impact	Prestianni ruled out of second leg

Prestianni’s Contested Claim

Interestingly, Prestianni admitted to using a homophobic slur against the Real Madrid forward, though he denied the racial abuse allegations. This distinction became central to Benfica’s failed appeal strategy. The club argued the suspension was premature given the investigation’s ongoing nature.

Benfica’s Defiant Stance

Despite knowing their appeal would likely fail, Benfica confirmed Prestianni would travel to Madrid with the squad, though it remains unclear whether he would be allowed on the bench or required to sit in the stands. The decision signaled the club’s support for their player while UEFA’s investigation continues.

What’s Next?

The real battle awaits after the second leg. If Prestianni is found to have used racist language in a game, he would be subject to a 10-game suspension—a sanction that could define the remainder of his season.

Meanwhile, Benfica faces another disappointment: the club’s complaint against Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde for alleged violent misconduct was dismissed by UEFA, removing another potential advantage from their equation.

The Bigger Picture

This incident has reignited discussions about racism in football and the effectiveness of disciplinary procedures. Vinícius Jr.’s response was powerful—describing racists as “cowards” who “need to put their shirts over their mouths to demonstrate how weak they are”—a sentiment that resonated across the footballing world.

For Benfica fans and José Mourinho’s squad, Wednesday’s match at the Bernabéu represents a mountain to climb without one of their attacking weapons. UEFA’s uncompromising stance sends a clear message: racism allegations will be treated with the utmost seriousness, regardless of institutional pressure or appeals.
