“Don’t Feed Rumours”: BCCI Secretary Shuts Down Rohit Sharma Retirement Talk

Whispers around Rohit Sharma’s ODI future have swirled through Indian cricket circles for months, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially drawn a line in the sand. Following a high-level review meeting in Mumbai, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia firmly squashed speculation regarding the veteran opener’s immediate international retirement.

“He is playing superbly in all matches. He scored a century in the last match he played. So, what more do you want? Why is there speculation? I don’t want to give fodder to rumours,” Saikia told reporters, sending an unequivocal signal about the former skipper’s standing.

Rohit Sharma Retirement: Form Over Whispers – The Lord’s Statement

The noise surrounding Rohit’s spot intensified following unconfirmed reports suggesting the selection committee intended to phase him out after the tour of England. However, the 39-year-old responded in trademark fashion: silencing critics with a commanding hundred at Lord’s.

While leadership across formats has seamlessly transitioned to Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, Rohit’s unmatched experience at the top of the order remains irreplaceable. Saikia clarified that the meeting was not a selection summit, but a strategic review designed to assess workload management, resolve recurring injury bottlenecks at the Centre of Excellence (CoE), and structure the long-term blueprint leading up to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The Human Side of the Transition

For a titan of Indian cricket who has lifted multiple ICC titles, facing constant public chatter about an impending exit is never easy. Yet, Rohit’s composure on and off the field demonstrates that he remains fully focused on delivering runs rather than engaging with off-pitch politics. With board backing and runs under his belt, the veteran looks determined to write his farewell script on his own terms.
