What’s Balti About?
Set in the town of Velampalayam, the film follows Udhayan, nicknamed Balti — a talented kabaddi player whose life is deeply rooted in friendship and family. After his team defeats a powerful local financier’s squad, they’re pulled into his world, only for cracks to appear once Udhayan witnesses the darker consequences of his mentor’s operations. A personal tragedy pushes him toward revenge, dragging him into a tense power struggle that ultimately reshapes his future.
A Special Homecoming For Shanthnu
Beyond the storyline, Balti marks a meaningful milestone — Shanthnu Bhagyaraj’s return to Malayalam cinema after 16 years, his last outing being the Mohanlal-starrer Angel John back in 2009. The film also leans heavily on kabaddi as a narrative device, a sport with deep roots across South Asia that continues shaping grassroots sports culture, much like kabaddi itself remains a symbol of community and competitive spirit in the region.
Filmed along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, the movie blends both Malayalam and Tamil dialogue, giving it a distinct bilingual texture that mirrors the region it’s set in.
