Balan: The Boy Heads Home — Here’s Where To Stream Chidambaram’s Cannes-Selected Thriller

A film that walked the halls of Cannes is about to land on your phone. Balan: The Boy, the Malayalam psychological drama that had its theatrical run in June, is now set for its digital premiere — and it’s arriving with the kind of festival pedigree that’s hard to ignore.

When And Where To Watch

Balan: The Boy streams on ZEE5 starting July 31, 2026. The platform confirmed the digital release date through an official post, giving fans a clear window to catch up on the film after its June 19 theatrical run.

Balan: The Boy Overview

What The Film Is About

The story follows Balan, raised by his mother inside a women’s correctional facility. Once released, she keeps them constantly moving, changing names and identities to outrun their past, teaching her son to trust no one. Years later, separated from her, Balan is taken in by a man named Abbas, who helps him track down his mother using the very survival lessons she once taught him. The reunion he finds doesn’t bring peace — it exposes just how deep the scars of their shared past run, pulling them back into the same cycle of fear they’d tried to escape.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Before its India theatrical run, the film was selected for sale at the Marché du Film, the industry marketplace that runs alongside the Cannes Film Festival, giving it credibility well beyond the usual OTT drop. Director Chidambaram, known for the hit Manjummel Boys, brings the same tense, grounded storytelling here, working off a screenplay by Suriya47 director Jithu Madhavan. Tovino Thomas also appears in an extended cameo, adding star power to an otherwise intense, character-driven watch.
