Bai Lu Trades Costume Drama for Revenge Saga in New Series “Kai Dao Tu Mi”

Chinese actress Bai Lu is stepping into bold new territory with her upcoming drama Kai Dao Tu Mi (开到荼蘼), marking her first project since parting ways with her talent agency of ten years. This one’s a real departure — no flowing hanfu, no ancient palaces. Instead, Bai Lu trades her usual costume-drama image for a gritty, modern revenge story. dramapanda

The series is adapted from The Last Blossom, a novel by acclaimed author Yi Shu, and is set in the 1990s, following Wang Yunna, a woman who is betrayed, imprisoned, and returns transformed to seek revenge. Interestingly, Bai Lu is credited in the show under her real name, Bai Mengyan, adding another layer of authenticity to this reinvention. dramapandadramapanda

Kai Dao Tu Mi: Details

The story doesn’t hold back on drama either. Wang Yunna returns to the country seven years later and meets Zuo Wensi, a rising fashion-world star. The two get engaged, only for her to discover his brother-in-law is actually her former lover, Teng Haiqi. Add in a novel packed with suspense, melodrama, and even a murder, and it’s easy to see why fans are already buzzing.

Bai Lu’s transformation arc is just as striking visually. She goes from an innocent young woman with long black hair to a sharp, composed, emotionally distant character with short hair in the revenge portion of the story. While some fans initially criticized the early wig and styling choices from behind-the-scenes photos, production has reportedly agreed to refine the hairstyle, though the short-hair look itself stays since it’s tied to the plot. dramapandadramapanda

Bai Lu, known for her breakout roles in Chinese television, per Wikipedia, has built a strong fanbase largely through historical dramas — making this modern pivot a significant career moment to watch.
