Meng Ziyi Finally Breaks Her Own Costume-Drama Pattern

Meng Ziyi knows exactly why fans are tired of seeing her play the same heroine. Turns out, she’s tired of it too — and she’s finally doing something about it.

The actress, who shot to fame with the hit drama Blossom and followed it up with Blossoms of Power opposite He Yu, has spent years playing strikingly similar costume-drama characters. With more period dramas already lined up alongside Dylan Wang and Li Yunrui, criticism about her repetitive casting had been building — and Meng Ziyi decided to address it head-on in a recent interview.

Her explanation was refreshingly honest: she gets attached to certain character types the same way she gets attached to her favorite restaurant dish, always ordering the same thing. But she admitted that comfort has come at a cost, and she’s now consciously turning down scripts that feel too familiar, even when they emotionally move her.

Meng Ziyi: Key Highlights

A Genuine Attempt at Reinvention

Rather than simply rejecting similar scripts, Meng Ziyi has been passing them along to industry friends so strong stories still find their way to audiences, even without her in the lead. It’s a small gesture, but one that shows she’s thinking about the bigger picture of storytelling, not just her own image.

Looking ahead, she’s hoping to break into suspense and Republican-era genres, territory she has never explored. She’s also gearing up for the modern-set drama Sanxian Mihui, for which she has already cut her hair short, a visible signal that she’s serious about shedding her costume-drama image. As one of the many rising stars in the competitive world of Chinese television dramas, Meng Ziyi’s willingness to acknowledge criticism rather than dismiss it may be exactly what reshapes how audiences see her next.
