August Magic: 12 South Indian Films You Can’t Miss This Month

August 2026 is stacking up to be a massive month for South Indian cinema, with heavyweight stars, genre-bending stories, and long-awaited debuts all hitting the big screen. Here’s a quick, easy rundown of all 12 films worth watching this month.

1. Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups (Aug 26)

Yash headlines this Kannada-English action thriller directed by Geetu Mohandas, playing Raya, a man who builds a violent empire in Goa across three decades of colonial rule. With Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria in the cast, the film promises a dark, sprawling saga about power, legacy, and a father-son clash.

2. DC (Aug 7)

Director Arun Matheswaran reimagines the classic Devadas story with Lokesh Kanagaraj as an outlaw wrongly accused of murder and theft. Caught between loyalty and betrayal, he forms an uneasy alliance with Chandra while finding brief solace with Parvathi, played by Wamiqa Gabbi.

3. Korean Kanakaraju (Aug 7)

This Telugu horror-comedy follows Varun Tej Konidela as a fiery small-town youth possessed by a spirit trapped in a Korean vase — one that turns him into a katana-wielding, Korean-speaking alter ego whenever the word “Korea” is spoken. Expect chaos, comedy, and cross-cultural mayhem.

4. GDN (Aug 7)

R. Madhavan leads this Tamil biographical drama about a rural innovator who becomes a pioneering industrialist. Despite hurdles, his mission to make technology accessible drives the emotional core of the film, supported by Priyamani and Sathyaraj.

5. Thudakkam (Aug 7)

Vismaya Mohanlal makes her acting debut in this Malayalam action thriller, playing Meenu, a young woman forced to confront a resurfacing threat from her past. Mohanlal appears in an extended cameo, adding star power to a story built on courage and martial arts.

6. Hi (Aug 14)

A gentle Tamil romantic comedy starring Nayanthara and Kavin, Hi follows two neighbors whose casual daily greetings slowly blossom into something deeper — a warm, low-stakes love story amid a month full of high-octane action films.

7. I’m Game (Aug 20)

Dulquer Salmaan plays Dan John, a risk-loving man who bets his life on algorithms instead of luck — until the system turns against him. This Malayalam action thriller, directed by Nahas Hidayath, leans into stylish chaos and unpredictable stakes.

8. Magudam (Aug 14)

Vishal steps behind the camera for his directorial debut, also starring as a peace-loving man dragged back into a violent legacy after betrayal shatters his quiet life. Anjali and Dushara Vijayan round out this Tamil action drama.

9. Khalifa: Part 1 – The Intro (Aug 20)

Prithviraj Sukumaran stars as Aamir Ali, heir to a vast gold-trading empire spanning the Middle East, London, Nepal, and Kerala. This Malayalam action drama explores family legacy and rivalry, with a Mohanlal cameo setting up a planned sequel.

10. Irumudi (Aug 21)

Ravi Teja plays a father battling alcoholism after tragedy upends his life, who vows to reform at his daughter’s request and undertakes a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. This Telugu family drama, directed by Shiva Nirvana, leans into redemption and emotional depth.

11. Vishwanath & Sons (Aug 14)

Suriya stars as Sanjay Vishwanath, a veteran chasing one final comeback whose life is upended when he falls for a much younger woman. Directed by Venky Atluri, this Tamil romantic family drama balances sporting ambition with personal responsibility, also starring Raveena Tandon.

12. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (Aug 21)

Nivin Pauly returns home from abroad and gets pulled into local family drama in this Malayalam romantic comedy from Girish AD. An unlikely age-gap romance stirs neighborhood gossip, while a wedding brings nostalgia and warmth to the community.
