Atletico Madrid Target Liverpool’s Andy Robertson Amid Summer Shake-Up

As Atletico Madrid gear up for a crucial transfer window, Diego Simeone’s side have reportedly set their sights on Liverpool stalwart Andy Robertson. With changes looming at Anfield and Liverpool closing in on Milos Kerkez as their potential new first-choice left-back, questions over Robertson’s long-term future are starting to surface.

Despite Robertson’s continued commitment to Liverpool, the Scotland captain could soon face a significant career decision, with a move abroad for the first time firmly on the table.

Liverpool’s Left Flank Under Review As Kerkez Talks Progress

After years of consistency at left-back, Liverpool seem prepared to reshape their defensive flanks. The club is edging closer to completing a deal for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, reportedly valued between £45m-£50m. New manager Arne Slot has earmarked the Hungarian international as his primary choice for the position heading into the upcoming season.

While Liverpool have been keen to retain Robertson’s services and potentially move on from backup Kostas Tsimikas, the reality is shifting. The 31-year-old Robertson could find himself competing for minutes, a scenario unfamiliar to the player who has made the role his own since joining from Hull City in 2017.

Robertson Weighs Up Future Amid Transfer Speculation

Despite speculation, Robertson remains focused on recovery after another intense campaign. Speaking on international duty last week, he admitted, “I’m not getting any younger – I can’t change my age – but I still believe I’ve got a lot to give.”

Robertson’s contributions to Liverpool’s recent success have been monumental. Having secured every major trophy available during his tenure—including a second Premier League title last season—he remains determined to continue fighting for his place. “My body feels good at the minute. I can’t tell you how I’ll feel at 33 or 34, but I can tell you, at 31, I feel excellent.”

Nevertheless, with his contract entering its final 12 months and competition intensifying, an exit, while not inevitable, is becoming more plausible.

Why a Move Abroad Could Appeal to Robertson

For Robertson, the prospect of playing abroad presents fresh challenges and opportunities. Speaking about fellow Scotland internationals Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay finding success outside of the UK, Robertson acknowledged, “When these players play abroad they see a different way of playing and lifestyle. That can only help.”

Scott McTominay’s sensational debut season with Napoli, culminating in a Scudetto and the Serie A Player of the Season award, hasn’t gone unnoticed. With La Liga often considered tactically demanding yet slightly slower in pace than the Premier League, Robertson could find the Spanish top flight an ideal destination to prolong his elite-level career.

Atletico Madrid’s Left-Back Dilemma Opens Door for Robertson

Atletico’s interest is well-timed. With both Cesar Azpilicueta and Reinildo Mandava out of contract, Simeone is actively hunting for reinforcements. The Argentine tactician, famed for building resolute, defensively disciplined squads, views Robertson as a perfect fit for his preferred setup.

Under Simeone’s leadership, Atletico consistently rank among Europe’s best defensively. Despite Liverpool’s traditionally attacking full-back role, Robertson’s aggressive pressing, leadership, and robust tackling align seamlessly with the Atletico philosophy.

Moreover, the chance to work under a manager with Simeone’s pedigree could be a significant motivating factor. The Argentine’s demanding environment has historically extracted the very best from players willing to embrace the challenge.

What Lies Ahead For Robertson?

While Liverpool’s hierarchy still values Robertson and are prepared to keep him alongside Kerkez for a demanding campaign across multiple competitions, the lure of a pivotal role at Atletico may be tempting. Personal factors—such as family life in Merseyside and his established legacy at Anfield—could complicate the decision.

Yet with the transfer window approaching and Atletico Madrid positioning themselves assertively, this summer may well mark a pivotal juncture in Andy Robertson’s decorated career.
