Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 1M Players on Launch Day

Ubisoft announced on March 21, 2024, that Assassin’s Creed Shadows had already exceeded one million players across all platforms on launch day. The publisher shared the sales milestone soon after the release, though it never disclosed the specific sales figures for the open-world action RPG. It launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on March 20.

Ubisoft thanked players for this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that revealed the achievement. “It’s not even 4PM here in Canada, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already passed one million players! Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for joining this adventure in Feudal Japan. We are beyond excited to start this journey with you,” the company wrote.

While Ubisoft didn’t break down exact sales at launch, the one million players are across several platforms: PC (Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and other storefronts), PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, you can also play it via their Ubisoft+ subscription service. And according to Steam’s Top Sellers chart, which charts the highest-grossing games on the platform, the sales appear solid, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows taking the No. 1 spot.

Elsewhere, SteamDB data over the game’s 24 hours in the market shows it hit a peak of 46,531 concurrent players. As promising as that is, the number is comparatively low to Monster Hunter Wilds (which pulled in one million concurrent players at the time of its launch) Details on the game’s sales performance will follow in the coming weeks. After multiple lengthy delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows finally hit March 20.

Ubisoft severed the initial release date of November 2024 to give the game more time to polish following two of its big-selling titles — Avatar: Frontiers of the Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws — fell short of its sales target. The success of the game is pivotal for Ubisoft, which is having a difficult financial year. In 2023, its share price dropped more than 40%, leading the founding Guillemot family to consider a buyout deal with Tencent and other investors.
