The consumer laptop landscape has just seen a seismic shift. Apple officially unveiled its new MacBook Air models, featuring the powerful M4 system-on-a-chip, and with their arrival came the immediate retirement of both the M2 and M3 versions of the popular machine. This streamlined approach to the lineup focuses on the bleeding edge of Apple Silicon, pushing the M4 Air as the sole option for those seeking a new entry-level Mac notebook.

Available in both 13-inch and 15-inch display configurations, the M4 MacBook Air replaces its predecessors, completing the transition of Apple’s Mac line to the latest generation of silicon.

A New Engine of Performance: What the MacBook M4 Chip Delivers

While the exterior design retains the sleek, thin chassis introduced with the M2 model, the biggest story lies beneath the surface. The M4 chip brings substantial gains, particularly in graphics and the all-important realm of Artificial Intelligence, positioning the new Air for the next generation of computing.

The new chip is engineered with a next-generation 3-nanometer-plus process, offering an impressive blend of power and efficiency.

MacBook
  • CPU and GPU: The M4 features a refined architecture, offering a notable bump in both single-core and multi-core tasks compared to the M3, and a far more significant leap from the M2.
  • Neural Engine: Crucially for future macOS features, the M4’s Neural Engine is significantly faster than previous generations, drastically accelerating on-device AI and machine learning tasks. This is set to unlock the full potential of new AI capabilities within the operating system.
  • Ray Tracing: Hardware-accelerated ray tracing, first introduced in the M3, is now refined on the M4, promising more realistic lighting and reflections in supported applications and games.

For users upgrading from a Mac using an older Intel processor or even the original M1 chip, the performance jump is simply staggering.

External Display Support Gets a Major Upgrade

One of the most requested features for the MacBook Air has finally arrived. The M4 models now support up to two external displays simultaneously, in addition to the laptop’s built-in display. This is a major workflow enhancement for professionals and power users who rely on a multi-monitor setup, eliminating the previous limitation that required the lid to be closed to utilize two external screens on the M3 model.

Key Features and Configurations

The new M4 Air maintains its status as an excellent blend of portability and power, but with several key updates that define this generation.

Streamlined Configurations and Pricing

In a welcome move, the base configuration has been strategically priced and upgraded. The 13-inch M4 MacBook Air starts at $999, which is the same starting price point as the previous M2 model had been before the M4 launch, and notably lower than the M3’s launch price. Furthermore, the new base configuration begins with an improved 16GB of unified memory, an upgrade that dramatically enhances multitasking capabilities over the former 8GB base.

Subtle Design Changes and Center Stage Camera

The overall thin and light design remains consistent with the previous generation, but Apple has introduced a new color: Sky Blue. This metallic shade joins the Silver, Midnight, and Starlight options, giving users a fresh aesthetic choice. Additionally, the new laptops feature an upgraded 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage support, a substantial improvement for video conferencing and remote work.

With the M2 and M3 models no longer for sale through Apple’s official new stores, the M4 MacBook Air sets a new baseline for the company’s consumer laptop offering, blending cutting-edge AI performance with essential, long-awaited hardware features.
