Why This Time It’s Actually Happening

Apple Pay has been stuck in “coming soon” limbo in India since its global launch in 2014 — longer than almost any major market worldwide. The core blocker was always regulatory: the RBI mandated an additional factor of authentication for digital payments, which conflicted with Apple Pay’s biometric-first approach.

The new RBI biometric authentication rules that now formally recognise Face ID and Touch ID as valid authentication factors have finally resolved that 11-year deadlock. The phased rollout starting with card-based NFC tap-to-pay is the logical entry point — India’s contactless card infrastructure has matured significantly, with NFC POS terminals now widely deployed across urban retail.

ICICI, HDFC, and Axis Bank being the first three partners covers a substantial chunk of India’s premium credit and debit card base. The bigger long-term play is Apple Watch tap-to-pay — a feature that will make the wearable significantly more compelling for existing and prospective buyers in India.
