Apple has been rumoured on numerous occasions to be abandoning mini-LED for the 2024 iPad Pro models in favour of OLED. While this advancement in display technology should provide various advantages, there was no definite launch timetable for these tablets until now, providing this rumour is true.
The M2 iPad Pro family debuted in October 2022, thus it’s odd that @korean_riceball is talking about’strong’ rumours regarding OLED versions launching in Q1 2024, which could be any time in January, February, or March.
Apple has not been reported to make any design changes to its next tablet, the only notable update will be the M3 chipset, which will be housed in the same chassis.
Also, Apple announced that iPad revenue was down compared to the previous quarter during its Q2 2023 earnings call, so an early debut of the OLED iPad Pro series could be a method to placate investors next year and immediately return in terms of sales.
While the M3 is rumoured to have been postponed until 2024, there could have been other factors that prevented Apple from launching this year. OLED panels, for example, are not cheap, with the company rumoured to pay up to $350 a device in display costs alone.
Because of this expense, Apple will have little alternative but to offer a premium to its customers, which means that the standard OLED iPad Pro will start at $1,800, making a MacBook Pro a more enticing option for people looking for more usefulness with their purchase. Apple is rumoured to be in talks with LG to help purchase affordable third-party OLED evaporator equipment in order to make the premium tablets a little less expensive.
