Apex Legends Season 16 is not making its Controller class free for newbies

Season 16 of Apex Legends is changing the way character classes work. Beginning with Season 16, the playable legends will be divided into five distinct classes, each with its own set of advantages. Assault, Recon, Skirmisher, Support, and Controller are the five new classes. Apex Legends has 23 playable legends, but new accounts only get six: Wraith, Pathfinder, Bloodhound, Gibraltar, Bangalore, and Lifeline. Skirmishers are Wraith and Pathfinder, Recon is Bloodhound, Assault is Bangalore, and Support is Gibraltar and Lifeline.

Apex Legends Season 16 is here!

Controllers specialise in area set-up and denial, with the ability to lock down and fortify a position so that their squad can bunker down to heal, prepare an ambush, or plan their next move. These legends are also the only ones who have access to the new Ring Consoles, which provide information on the size and location of the next ring. As of Season 16, there are four Controllers: Caustic, Wattson, Rampart, and Catalyst.

As Reddit user dropnation40 pointed out, none of those four characters in Apex Legend are free, which means that new players will have to grind to earn enough currency to unlock them or pay real money to buy any of them outright.

None of them are freely available as part of the Anniversary Collection Event, which kicks off Season 16. Logging into Apex Legends during the first week of the event rewards you with Crypto (a Recon legend), and doing so again during the second week rewards you with Ash (an Assault legend).

New characters can be unlocked using either Legend Tokens or Apex Coins. Playing the game earns you Legend Tokens, with 600 unlocked with each level. However, it takes 12,000 Legend Tokens to unlock a character, which is a bit of a steep learning curve when you first start out. Spending Apex Coins is much faster, but unlocking the currency requires real money. A legend can be purchased for 750 Apex Coins, which is slightly more than $7 USD.
