Amsterdam Empire Netflix Review: Why Famke Janssen’s Comeback Falls Flat

Amsterdam Empire marks Famke Janssen’s highly anticipated return to Dutch television, but this revenge-fueled crime drama struggles to find its identity. Despite Netflix’s track record with Dutch thrillers, this seven-episode series misses the mark spectacularly.

Netflix Overview: Amsterdam Empire

What’s Amsterdam Empire About?

The series follows Betty (Famke Janssen), a former pop star turned high-society housewife who discovers her husband Jack’s serial infidelities. Jack Van Doorn (Jacob Derwig) owns The Jackal—a successful cannabis coffee shop empire in Amsterdam. When he announces divorce plans to marry TV anchor Marjolain (Elise Schaap), Betty launches a calculated campaign to destroy everything he’s built.

Where Amsterdam Empire Goes Wrong

Identity Crisis

The show can’t decide whether it’s a soapy power struggle or a narcotics thriller. This indecision creates a disjointed viewing experience that fails to satisfy fans of either genre. For viewers seeking quality crime dramas with strong narratives, this tonal confusion becomes increasingly frustrating.

One-Dimensional Characters

Despite Janssen’s enthusiastic performance, Betty is reduced to the tired “scorned wife” trope. Her revenge schemes feel juvenile rather than cunning, while Jack lacks the depth needed to justify his screen time. Supporting characters appear and disappear without meaningful development.

Lackluster Execution

For a crime thriller, Amsterdam Empire surprisingly avoids action sequences and dynamic pacing. The directors fail to capitalize on elaborate set pieces, leaving scenes feeling flat and uninspired.

The Few Bright Spots

Famke Janssen clearly enjoys the over-the-top nature of her role, bringing Hollywood glamour to Amsterdam’s gritty underworld. The experienced creative team behind Undercover and Ferry shows occasional flashes of competence, but they’re too few to salvage the series.

Should You Watch Amsterdam Empire?

Skip it unless you’re a die-hard Famke Janssen fan. The series squanders its potential with unfocused writing and exhausted revenge drama clichés. Netflix subscribers looking for quality streaming content would be better served revisiting The Gentlemen or Ozark.
