AMD EPYC 8005 “Sorano” Announced — 84 Zen 5 Cores for 5G Edge

AMD just quietly dropped one of its most strategically important server chips of 2026. The AMD EPYC 8005 “Sorano” series — successor to the 2023 Siena lineup — brings Zen 5 architecture to AMD’s single-socket telco and edge tier, and it’s doing so with a core count that leaves Intel’s closest rival looking a bit short.

AMD EPYC 8005 “Sorano”: What We Know So Far

Why This Chip Matters for 5G Infrastructure

The EPYC 8005 series sits between AMD’s high-end EPYC 9005 lineup and its more cost-focused server parts, creating a dedicated tier for single-socket infrastructure that needs strong compute density without the platform complexity of multi-socket scaling — exactly what modern vRAN deployments need as trials convert into commercial rollouts.

AMD has introduced targeted LDPC decoding optimisations in Sorano — these improve Layer 1 efficiency for 5G workloads, reduce forward-error-correction latency, and free up compute headroom for additional Layer 1 and Layer 2 processing functions, helping operators support more tasks per server.

Sorano also supports wider thermal operating ranges for NEBS-compliant systems commonly used in rugged outdoor cell sites and remote edge cabinets — environments that don’t match the thermal stability of a conventional data centre.

Against Intel’s Xeon 6 SoC, which tops out at 42 cores, AMD’s 84-core ceiling is a significant advantage — though Intel counters with dedicated vRAN-Boost hardware accelerators and 200 Gbps onboard Ethernet.
