AMD EPYC 7773X Milan-X Flagship CPU appears with Dual-Socket Configuration in new Benchmark in CPU-Z

In a dual-socket configuration, AMD’s freshly announced EPYC 7773X flagship Milan-X CPU has been benchmarked. HXL discovered the CPU benchmarks on a Chinese Taobao retail outlet where it is for sale.

The top AMD EPYC 7773X processor will have 64 cores, 128 threads, with a TDP of 280W. The clock rates will be kept at 2.2 GHz base and 3.5 GHz boost, while the cache will be increased to a whopping 768 MB. This includes the chip’s regular 256 MB of L3 cache, so we’re looking at a total of 512 MB from the stacked L3 SRAM, implying that each Zen 3 CCD will have 64 MB of L3 cache. That’s a 3x improvement over the current EPYC Milan CPUs.

The EPYC 7773X Milan-X CPU ‘100-000000504-04 34/21 N’ utilized in the benchmark is a QS/ES processor with a base clock of 1.8 GHz and a maximum reported frequency of 2.9 GHz, according to the CPU benchmark. Both of these are slower than the known final clock speeds, so expect retail-ready models to perform far better. On the Supermicro H12DSi-N6 motherboard, which supports up to 4 TB DDR4-3200 memory, two AMD EPYC 7773X CPUs were tested.

In the CPU-Z multi-threaded benchmark, the two AMD EPYC 7773X CPUs with Zen 3 cores earned an extremely incredible 29668.9 points. That’s only a few hundred points short of the 30,000 level, which will be quickly surpassed with the final retail units. While there aren’t many 256 thread entries in the CPU-z database, we know that a single Threadripper 3995WX can get the same results, indicating that CPU-z doesn’t scale well beyond 64 cores, and we’re talking about 128 cores and 256 threads here.

Also, the additional MBs of cache that will be used by HPC and cloud computing data centers should not benefit CPU-z much, so expect the real advantages from those workloads. Earlier, we saw a set of benchmarks in which the EPYC 7773X outperformed the EPYC 7763 in a variety of tests.

The EPYC 7773X Milan-X QS/ES CPUs from AMD are presently available for purchase on Taobao for 18,000 RMB (about USD 3000). Given that the Threadripper PRO 3995WX is still advertised for over $5000 US and the basic Threadripper 3990X is $3990 US, it’s a pretty good deal. The final model won’t be as inexpensive as these ES parts, and we should expect the Milan-X parts to cost more than $9000 US.
