AMD has a strong affection for its very popular Zen2 architecture which we know was a phenomenal hit in the market when it was launched. As we remember Ryzen 4000 series for mobile made AMD synonymous among laptop enthusiasts who needed max performance at lower TDPs and extending battery life.
AMD’s Mendocino APU is here for budget laptops
Now, as TSMC’s 6nm look to be available in good quantities, AMD is trying to expand its offering by launching a new class of APUs genuinely made for budget laptops. A lot of laptops these days need a performance in the budget end but due to price constraints, or availability cheaper ones do end up becoming crippled.
Not anymore, because AMD’s new 6nm based Mendocino APU brings the best of both worlds i.e. Zen2 CPU architecture and revolutionary RDNA2 graphics. This new APU for budget laptops will debut in Q4 this year before they launch Ryzen 7000 series for laptops codenamed “Dragon Range/Phoenix” with Zen4 cores next year.
This new AMD Mendocino will feature up to four Zen2 cores and eight threads which shows it’s not meant for high-performance laptops. This SoC has been designed for low-power mainstream laptops to give over 10 hours of mixed-use battery life and that’s a really big statement and Chromebooks will also use this APU.
Having the RDNA2 graphics will help gamers to enjoy some iGPU gaming as well while laptops using APUs with Mendocino architecture should retail at 399 to 699 USD. This is more of AMD’s Van Gogh APU we see on Steam Deck but here it uses a newer 6nm process.
