India has been a software superpower for decades. Reliance and Zuckerberg‘s Meta just announced a deal that signals the country’s ambition to become a hardware superpower too.

In one of the most consequential technology infrastructure announcements in India’s history, Reliance Industries Limited announced a partnership with Meta Platforms for a data centre project in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance will develop a data centre with 168MW capacity to be delivered within two years, with an option to scale. This is the first built-to-suit data centre capacity in India for Meta — and it represents a defining moment in the country’s emergence as a serious destination for global AI infrastructure investment.

The announcement, made on June 10, 2026, carries weight far beyond its immediate specifications. It is a statement about where the global AI industry believes its future computing needs will be met.

Why Jamnagar? The Strategic Logic of the Location

The strategic location in Gujarat offers significant advantages for large-scale data centre operations, including delivery capability, renewable energy, water availability, proximity to India’s western submarine cable landing stations, and Jio’s extensive fibre network.

Each of those factors matters enormously at the scale of a 168MW AI data centre:

Submarine cable proximity — AI data centres are only as useful as their ability to move data quickly between continents. Gujarat’s western coastline sits on the natural routing path for undersea cables connecting India to Europe, the Middle East, and East Africa. Locating a major AI compute facility near cable landing stations dramatically reduces latency for international data flows.

Jio fibre network — Reliance’s Jio has built one of the world’s largest fibre-optic networks across India. The data centre plugs directly into that backbone, ensuring that Meta’s AI infrastructure can serve India’s 1.4 billion users — the largest Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp user base anywhere in the world — with minimal latency.

Renewable energy access — Gujarat is one of India’s leading states for solar and wind energy infrastructure. Meta separately contracted nearly 1 GW of new clean energy in India through CleanMax (837MW) and Fourth Partner Energy (88MW) — a clean energy commitment that dwarfs the data centre’s 168MW requirement and signals a long-term infrastructure play, not a short-term fix.

Desalinated seawater cooling — Data centres require enormous quantities of water for cooling. Jamnagar’s coastal location makes desalinated seawater a practical solution, avoiding the freshwater stress that has become a genuine concern for inland data centre operations globally.

What the Leaders Said

Both Mukesh Ambani and Mark Zuckerberg issued statements that go beyond standard corporate announcement language — and the specific phrasing is worth noting.

Mukesh Ambani called the partnership a “transformative moment” for India’s digital infrastructure, saying: “Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation — not just for India, but for the world.”

Mark Zuckerberg said: “This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”

The phrase “personal superintelligence” appeared in Meta’s official announcement — Meta described the facility as bringing “infrastructure that powers our products and AI capabilities needed to deliver personal superintelligence to one of our largest and fastest-growing communities globally.” That framing — superintelligence, not just AI features — signals the ambition scale Meta is operating at in 2026.

A Relationship That’s Been Building Since 2020

This data centre deal doesn’t arrive in isolation. The partnership expands a relationship that has evolved from Meta’s multibillion-dollar investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms to a $100 million joint venture launched last year to develop enterprise AI solutions for customers in India and overseas markets.

The timeline of the Reliance-Meta relationship tells a coherent strategic story:

  • 2020: Meta invests $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms — gaining access to India’s largest telecom and digital ecosystem
  • 2025: Joint $100 million enterprise AI venture launched — building AI products for Indian and global enterprise customers
  • 2026: 168MW AI data centre announced — physical infrastructure to back the digital ambitions of both companies

Each step has deepened the interdependency. The data centre is the infrastructure layer that makes everything else — the Jio distribution network, the enterprise AI products, the WhatsApp and Instagram AI features — faster, more capable, and more locally anchored for Indian users.

India’s Larger AI Infrastructure Moment

This deal is not happening in a vacuum. Google is planning a 1GW hyperscale AI data centre across 601.4 acres in three Andhra Pradesh locations, partnering with AdaniConneX and Airtel, with a $15 billion investment planned for 2026–2030. Multiple global hyperscalers are simultaneously choosing India as a primary destination for next-generation AI infrastructure.

The reasons are consistent across every announcement: India’s massive and growing user base, its renewable energy capacity, its improving submarine cable connectivity, its competitive land and construction costs, and — increasingly — its geopolitical stability as a neutral ground in an era of US-China technology tensions.

Rather than serving only as a software or services hub, India is increasingly positioning itself as a destination for the physical infrastructure of the AI era. The Reliance-Meta announcement is the clearest single data point yet that this transition is already underway.

We recently covered Addverb Technologies raising $100 million to build India’s robotics industry — another Reliance-backed bet on India’s physical technology future.
