Alexis Sanchez’s incredible 120th-minute winner in the Italian Super Cup final against Juventus sets off wild celebrations

Inter Milan won the Italian Super Cup final 2-1 thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s last-gasp extra-time winner. Inter won the competition for the first time in 11 years, defeating the side that has won the trophy more times than anybody else.

Wild Celebrations with Joy

When Sanchez prodded home from close range in the 120th minute, just as it appeared that the winner would be decided on penalties, the home crowd erupted in applause. According to Opta, Sanchez has scored the newest goal in the Italian Super Cup’s history (121 minutes), surpassing Gonzalo Higuain, who scored for Napoli against Juventus in the 118th minute back in 2014.

Sanchez scored his 15th goal in 88 games for Inter. In 18 appearances this season, the former Arsenal and Manchester United forward have scored four goals. Inter has won the Italian Super Cup for the sixth time. They are only two points behind Juventus, who have won nine trophies, and AC Milan, who has won eight (seven). For the first time since 2010, Inter has won the trophy. Under Rafael Benitez, they had beaten AS Roma 3-1.

Since 1929-30, Inzaghi has been the first manager to defeat Juventus in most finals. In the Italian Super Cup, he has won each of his three finals versus the Bianconeri. Inzaghi’s team, on the other hand, dominated the show, registering a total of 23 shots, including six on target. They also controlled the ball for 64% of the time.

On 25 minutes, Weston McKennie put the Turin side ahead, but Juve’s joy was short-lived. The Nerazzurri dominated possession and shots on goal, but penalties appeared to be a certain conclusion as the clock ticked down. Alex Sandro’s blunder in his box, though, proved to be Juventus’ undoing.

Sandro attempted to chest it back to Giorgio Chiellini as Federico Dimarco whipped in a cross from the left. However, with a vital touch, ex-Manchester United ace Matteo Darmian beat Chiellini to the ball, putting Sanchez in front of Mattia Perrin.
