If you’re an Airtel user tethering your laptop to your “unlimited” 5G plan, you might want to double-check the fine print — because right now, even Google doesn’t seem to agree with itself on whether that’s allowed.

A search for Airtel’s Unlimited 5G Data terms throws up a snippet claiming hotspot sharing isn’t permitted. Click through to the actual terms page, though, and that restriction is nowhere to be found. Cue widespread confusion.

Airtel 5G: Confusion, Broken Down

Detail	What We Know
Google Search Snippet	States hotspot sharing “shall not be allowed”
Airtel’s Live T&Cs Page	No such restriction currently mentioned
Company Clarification	None issued so far
Real-World User Experience	Many report hotspot works fine, no restrictions faced
Jio’s Equivalent Plan	Explicitly allows hotspot sharing on Unlimited True 5G

What’s Actually Going On

Airtel’s Unlimited 5G Data offer is available on select prepaid and postpaid plans, activated through the Airtel Thanks app for users on 5G-compatible phones within Airtel 5G Plus coverage. The core benefit — unlimited 5G data on the primary device — isn’t in question. What’s murky is whether that data can be shared with other devices via mobile hotspot, a common feature that lets a phone act as a Wi-Fi router for laptops or tablets, a concept explained in detail on Wikipedia.

Despite the mixed signals, plenty of users are reportedly hotspotting away without any visible restrictions, which suggests the policy — if it exists at all — either isn’t being enforced or was pulled from the official terms without much fanfare. Either way, Airtel hasn’t stepped in to clear things up.

How Airtel Stacks Up Against Jio

This is where the comparison gets interesting. Reliance Jio’s Unlimited True 5G plan explicitly permits hotspot sharing, making it the go-to option for users who regularly tether multiple devices. Airtel’s ambiguity here could quietly push tethering-heavy users toward its rival unless the confusion gets resolved soon.

What To Watch For

Airtel’s broader shift toward Standalone (SA) 5G — along with its expanding fixed wireless access and home broadband push — could eventually reshape how these plans work. But that’s a longer-term shift, and it doesn’t resolve today’s confusion. Until Airtel issues an official clarification or updates its terms consistently across all channels, hotspot users are left relying on real-world experience rather than a clear written policy.
