Airtel 185 Voice-Only Plan: Is It Worth the Price

What Happened: Airtel Moves First

Imagine paying every month for 4G and 5G data you never touch, just to keep your phone number alive. For millions of Indians who still use basic phones, that has been the reality.

That is the problem the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) set out to fix. It directed operators to offer special tariff vouchers for calls and SMS without bundled data, with an October 21 compliance deadline. Airtel got there first, listing three plans on its app and website ahead of the deadline.

None of the three plans includes mobile data. Per-day figures are our own calculation. The ₹206 plan follows the calendar, so it lasts 31 days in January and just 28 in February.

The Debate: “Is ₹185 Really Cheap?”

The launch drew an instant reaction on X. One widely shared post argued that people expected a very low-priced plan, and that a 28-day validity, not a full month, makes it feel worse. The same user suggested a calling-only plan shouldn’t cost more than ₹50, and asked why anyone would pick it if a plan with data costs about the same.

Replies were split. Some users joked about “28 days” meaning customers pay for 13 recharges a year instead of 12. Others pushed back and said that anyone who finds ₹185 a month unaffordable probably isn’t buying a smartphone in the first place.

Both sides have a point, and the truth sits somewhere in the middle.

Why ₹185 Doesn’t Feel Like a Bargain

Secondary SIM holders: If you keep a second number only for calls, OTPs and banking messages, this works well.
Wi-Fi-first users: If you live on home or office Wi-Fi, you may not need mobile data at all.

Skip it if you use UPI, maps or messaging apps on the go. A basic data plan will serve you better.

What About Jio and Vi?

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea are also covered by the TRAI directive. Reports say Jio already offers voice-only plans with longer validity, such as ₹448 for 84 days. Airtel’s shorter-validity packs are new, and rival launches are likely to follow. Competition could push prices down, so keep an eye on them.

Our Verdict

The ₹185 plan is a useful option that should have existed years ago. It is not the ultra-cheap offer many people were hoping for. It is a decent deal for feature-phone owners and second-SIM users and a hard sell for everyone else. If prices fall as Jio and Vi respond, the real winner will be the customer.
