AIIMS: India’s First 5G Enabled Institution

The AIIMS has decided to have its campus 5G-enabled by June 30 to allow for the best possible use of contemporary communication technologies for patient care, teaching, and research. According to officials, it will be the first institution in the nation to support 5G, and a five-member team has been established to hasten the process.

AIIMS will be India’s First 5G Enabled Institution

It is ideal for the entire campus to have a good strength of 5G mobile networks that provide strong mobile and data connectivity within the buildings. This will enable the optimum utilisation of modern communication technology for treating patients, teaching, research, good governance, and optimal implementation of integrated medical university information systems (IMUIS).

The institute, AIIMS, will be able to implement casualty and eICU solutions across its main campus and outreach campuses, such as NCI Jhajjar, thanks to robust 5G connectivity, he continued, which will allow senior faculty members to offer their professional judgement during off-duty hours and vacations as well.

According to administrative officials, the institute receives roughly 50,000 visitors per day, making robust mobile connectivity crucial. It has been noticed that several areas of the institute now have no minimal cellphone coverage, which is highly uncomfortable for everyone—patients, staff, and visitors. Also, there is almost no 5G connectivity inside the institute buildings, and there is very little 3G/4G internet access in most regions.

Prof. Vivek Tandon, Department of Neurosurgery, AIIMS, will be the committee’s chairman.

To enable the campus 5 G by June 30, officials said the committee would send an expression of interest to all 5G mobile service providers in the NCT of Delhi by March 20. They will also ask them to survey the campus and present their gap analysis and solution design by April 15. The committee was instructed to turn in the report every two weeks.
