After E20 Petrol’s Success, Nitin Gadkari Reveals India’s Next Big Move: 15% Isobutanol Blending In Diesel

India’s biofuel journey is entering a new chapter. Fresh off the successful nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the government is now exploring up to 15% isobutanol blending in diesel — a move aimed squarely at cutting India’s massive crude oil import bill.

Speaking at the launch of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex Fuel, Gadkari explained the science in simple terms: ethanol can’t be blended directly with diesel, so the government is working on converting ethanol into isobutanol instead — a next-generation biofuel that’s more compatible with existing diesel engines. He also revealed that two generator sets have already been successfully run on 100% ethanol and isobutanol, proving that engines can indeed be built to handle these alternative fuels.

Bharat Petroleum is already conducting research on this blend, with officials describing early results as encouraging.
