A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Your Complete Guide to HBO’s New Game of Thrones Prequel

Get ready for another journey to Westeros! HBO’s latest Game of Thrones spinoff takes a refreshing turn from epic battles and dragon wars, focusing instead on the heartwarming adventures of a humble knight and his mysterious squire. Here’s everything you need to know before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres next month.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Guide

What Makes This Different?

Unlike the political intrigue of Game of Thrones or the dragon-fueled civil war in House of the Dragon, this series delivers something refreshingly intimate. Set during a rare peaceful era when Targaryens ruled without dragons, the show follows Ser Duncan the Tall—a seven-foot hedge knight with more heart than experience—and his clever young squire Egg, who’s hiding a massive royal secret.

The tone shift is intentional. As showrunner Ira Parker explains, this adapts the beloved “lighter” novellas that George R.R. Martin himself calls among his favorites. Expect humor, genuine friendship, muddy tournaments, and trials by combat—all wrapped in that signature Westeros grit.

Meet Your New Heroes

Peter Claffey brings Ser Duncan to life with endearing awkwardness. The former Irish rugby player (seen in Bad Sisters and Vikings: Valhalla) describes Dunk as “anxious, nervous but very lovable”—basically all of us trying to do the right thing in a complicated world.

Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg, the sharp-tongued squire whose real identity as Prince Aegon Targaryen could change everything. Fresh from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Ansell has been called “the greatest child actor in the world” by the showrunner.

The supporting cast features Finn Bennett as the villainous Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, and Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, among others.

What to Expect in Season 1

Based on Martin’s first Dunk and Egg novella The Hedge Knight, the season centers on the Ashford tournament where honor clashes with dirty politics. The story builds toward an intense Trial of Seven—a rare combat where Dunk must rally six allies against seven royal champions. According to HBO, this marks a new chapter in their Westeros franchise.

Martin himself promises the series stays true to the novellas while warning, “no one is truly safe.” Translation: even lighter stories in Westeros come with consequences.

Already Renewed for Season 2

HBO announced the Season 2 renewal in November 2025—before Season 1 even premiered. Filming begins this month in Belfast, Ireland, with a 2027 release expected. This confidence signals HBO’s belief in the show’s potential to captivate both die-hard fans and newcomers.
