Apple was initially expected to introduce ProMotion technology across the entire iPhone 17 series, but new leaks suggest otherwise. According to a recent tip from a source known as Fixed Focus Digital, Apple may continue to differentiate the standard and Pro models by limiting advanced features to the higher-end variants. This new claim goes against previous information and implies both the iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air could lack some of the Pro models’ display tricks.

iPhone 17 and 17 Air Might Skip ProMotion Technology Despite Earlier Reports, Claims New Leak

Specifically, the iPhone 17 and 17 Air might not feature adaptive ProMotion, where the display’s refresh rate is automatically changed based on the user’s usage to conserve battery life and make the hardware more responsive. As much as earlier leaks suggested all iPhone 17 models would feature the ProMotion, this new report disagrees. According to Fixed Focus Digital, the standard models will feature 120Hz displays, but without the adaptive refresh capabilities found in ProMotion.

This means the screens would run at a consistently high 120Hz refresh rate with LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) panels instead of the efficient LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) tech found in Pro models. While a fixed 120Hz display would still be an improvement over the 60Hz panels currently found on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, it could lead to higher battery consumption since the refresh rate wouldn’t scale down during static content. On the upside, users would see smoother animations and scrolling.

However, the absence of ProMotion would also mean no Always-On Display, a feature that keeps widgets, clocks, and notifications visible even when the phone is idle. Contradicting this leak, respected analyst Ross Young maintains that ProMotion will be coming to the entire iPhone 17 lineup, noting that Apple suppliers are ramping up LTPO panel production. With multiple sources offering differing views, there’s still some hope that ProMotion may eventually become standard across all iPhone 17 models.

FAQs
