While most people would agree that Neymar is one of the best footballers in the world, the same status cannot be assigned to his antics off the pitch. The Brazilian is currently making the headlines due to organizing a 5-day party in Rio de Janeiro, which involves more than 500 invitees.
Somewhat thoughtfully, Neymar had a soundproof disco built for the party so that the neighbours would not be bothered. And given the current situation of the world, with the dangers of the coronavirus pandemic still very real, it has not gone down well with not only football fans but people from all across the world.
The strange thing about the party is that mobile phones have been banned so that the activities that happen inside are not revealed to the outside world. The party is reported to have begun on the 25th of December, Christmas Day, and will be expected to continue until New Year’s Day.
Human rights lawyer Augusto de Arruda Botelho tweeted: “The idiot trophy for the day goes to Neymar for his five-day party.”
The total number of coronavirus cases in Brazil is close to 7.5 million, and 191,000 people have died from the disease. Ignoring the figures and precautions, and engaging in frivolous celebrations does not add to Neymar’s dodgy reputation off the pitch, and surely does not set him up as an ideal role model.
This is where the Brazilian differs from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who know how to respect the situation at hand and conduct themselves off the pitch.
