Apple has significantly ramped up its manufacturing operations in India, assembling iPhones worth $22 billion in the financial year ending March 2025 — a 60% increase from the previous year. The expansion has increased India’s portion of global iPhone production to 20 percent, compared to about 12 percent in 2023, as per a report by the Bloomberg News by Sankalp Phartiyal noted.

Apple Assembles $22 Billion Worth of iPhones in India, Boosting Global Production Shift

The action reflects Apple’s long-term push to reduce reliance on China, which saw its supply chains crippled amid COVID-19 lockdowns. In India, Foxconn manufactures the majority of iPhones and Tata Group plays a larger role after acquiring Wistron’s Indian division and overseeing Pegatron’s local assets.

On April 8, India’s tech minister revealed that Apple exported iPhones totalling ₹1.5 trillion ($17.4 billion) in FY2025. These exports received a boost after the U.S. President Donald Trump proposed cumulative tariffs of 145% on Chinese imports. While electronics like smartphones and computers are currently exempt, the tariff pressure has made India-assembled iPhones more competitive for U.S. exports, reinforcing Apple’s shift.

Analysts believe Apple will increasingly rely on India’s manufacturing ecosystem to meet U.S. demand. However, the company still depends on around 200 suppliers in China, and experts suggest a full-scale relocation will take time. Bloomberg Intelligence previously estimated it could take up to eight years to shift even 10% of Apple’s production out of China.

Still, Apple’s push in India is moving forward. The company now assembles its entire range of iPhones in the nation — even high-end titanium Pro models — backed by government incentives linked to the ‘Make in India’ push. New measures, including new $2.7 billion in subsidies, will continue to boost local production of electronics and chips. Apple’s market share in India has also risen to 8%, with sales of $8 billion annually, mostly thanks to demand for its iPhones.
