Hardik Pandya : In a format dominated by brutal batting and relentless sixes, it’s not every day that a bowler steals the spotlight. But on a charged-up Friday night in the IPL 2025 clash between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, Hardik Pandya did just that—and more. The Mumbai Indians skipper etched his name into the history books by becoming the first-ever captain in IPL history to take a five-wicket haul, with stunning figures of 5/36 in just four overs.

What’s more incredible? This was Pandya’s first-ever fifer in T20 cricket—not just in the IPL, but across all formats of the game.

Hardik Pandya’s Maiden Fifer: A Captain’s Spell That Rewrote IPL History

Breaking Personal and League Records

Before this game, Pandya‘s best T20 bowling figures stood at 3/17. He had never even taken four wickets in a T20, let alone a five-wicket haul. But all that changed under the lights at Lucknow, as the all-rounder went on a rampage, sending top-class batters back to the pavilion.

Here’s the list of his prized scalps on the night:

Aiden Markram (53) – broke a threatening partnership
Nicholas Pooran (12) – dismissed at a crucial time
Rishabh Pant (2) – huge wicket, derailed LSG’s momentum
David Miller (27) – another big-hitter neutralized
Akash Deep (0) – cleaned up the tail

With this performance, Hardik’s IPL 2025 tally jumped to 8 wickets in 3 matches, pushing him up to second place in the Purple Cap standings, just behind CSK’s Noor Ahmad (9 wickets). His economy and average speak volumes too—10 overs, 75 runs, 8 wickets at 9.35 average.

Better Than the Best: Captain Among Captains

Pandya’s 5/36 now sits proudly as the best bowling figures by a captain in IPL history, surpassing legends like:

Anil Kumble (4/16)
Shane Warne (4/21)
JP Duminy (4/17)
Yuvraj Singh (4/29)

This wasn’t just a standout performance; it was a statement. The kind that reminds everyone why Hardik Pandya is one of India’s most impactful T20 players.

Hardik’s Growing Legacy: The Bunnies and the Big Names

Across his IPL career, Hardik now has 72 wickets, including dismissals of some of the biggest names in world cricket. He’s known to trouble:

Shubman Gill – 4 dismissals in 5 innings
Mayank Agarwal – 3 in 6
Manish Pandey – 3 in 7

But his victim list doesn’t stop there—he’s also taken the scalps of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler, KL Rahul, Yuvraj Singh, and Kane Williamson, among others.

A Crucial Spell in MI’s Comeback Story

While Pandya shone, the rest of the MI bowling unit struggled. Mitchell Santner went for 0/46, Deepak Chahar conceded 23 in just 2 overs, and even last-match hero Ashwani Kumar gave away 39 runs for a solitary wicket. With Jasprit Bumrah still sidelined due to a back injury, Pandya’s bowling performance couldn’t have come at a better time for Mumbai Indians.

And while MI still had to chase down a daunting 204-run target, this fifer from their captain was already the highlight of the night.

Pandya’s Moment, IPL’s Milestone

Hardik Pandya’s evolution from an explosive all-rounder to a game-changing captain was already in motion—but this performance accelerated it. His first fifer, the first by an IPL captain, and career-best T20 figures are not just milestones—they’re a marker of his growing legacy.
