AMD has destroyed intel performance in the desktop CPU segment, and it seems that the only salvation intel has now left is the laptop CPUs. And with its latest Tiger Lake-U CPUs performing exceptionally well, it appears that the silicon giant still has the crown of best performing laptop CPU.
But things could easily change after the upcoming CES 2021 event. According to sources, AMD is set to release its Ryzen 5000 mobile APUs, and we already know the terror which the line-up will bring in the market. Intel is also not sitting idle, but whether its next in line Tiger Lake-H processors can match up to the Ryzen 5000 mobile, APUs remains to be seen.
However, intel is not just relying on its Tiger Lake-H but is also looking to combat AMD with more platform-level enhancements. As we know, intel’s Evo platform brings along with it the support for Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. Something that AMD severely lacks. Thus, reports indicate that Intel is now introducing another advantage with the “Clover Falls” AI companion chip available only for EVO-certified laptops.
According to Intel, the new chip is officially called the Intel Visual Sensing Controller. Its primary purpose is to help “make PCs more smart and secure through the power of Intel artificial intelligence.” The company states that the new AI chip will help notebooks better adapt to their surroundings. It means that if the chip doesn’t detect a user’s presence, it will automatically decrease the notebooks’ brightness.
The AI chip can work with any camera sensor will help preserve battery life as the CPU sees less frequent utilization. According to sources, intel might decide to integrate the AI chip with commercial PCs like business laptops, but consumer PCs should also get this feature not too long after. For more details, let’s wait till CES 2021.
