AMD FSR 4: AMD has officially confirmed that FSR 4, the latest version of its FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling technology, has been co-developed in collaboration with Sony. This revelation marks a significant milestone in gaming technology, particularly for PlayStation and PC gamers.

AMD FSR 4 Co-Developed with Sony: A Game-Changer for Upscaling

A Collaborative Effort with Sony

In a recent announcement on social media, AMD expressed excitement about its partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment on Project Amethyst, a machine learning initiative aimed at improving AI-driven upscaling techniques. According to AMD, this partnership is only the beginning of what could be a transformative shift in gaming visuals.

The origins of this collaboration trace back to late 2024, when Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro was nearing completion. Mark Cerny, the PS5 Pro System Architect, explained in an exclusive interview that discussions on Project Amethyst began as early as 2023. The goal was to create AI architectures that could be leveraged across different platforms, including PC, consoles, and cloud gaming services.

FSR 4: A Major Leap Forward

Unlike its predecessors, FSR 4 integrates AI-driven upscaling models, a departure from the spatial and temporal upscaling techniques used in FSR 1 and FSR 2, respectively. This shift allows FSR 4 to deliver superior image quality, significantly narrowing the gap between AMD’s solution and NVIDIA’s DLSS technology.

While FSR 4 has been praised for its substantial improvements over FSR 3, there is a catch: it is currently limited to the new Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs. This move mirrors NVIDIA’s strategy of restricting its DLSS technology to GeForce RTX GPUs, ensuring that only newer hardware can leverage the most advanced upscaling techniques.

The Competitive Upscaling Landscape

AMD’s latest advancements in FSR 4 demonstrate its commitment to competing with NVIDIA’s well-established DLSS. While NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 remains the gold standard for AI-based upscaling, FSR 4 has significantly closed the performance gap. The competition between these two industry giants is expected to drive further innovation, ultimately benefiting gamers worldwide.

With PlayStation’s involvement in the development of FSR 4, the technology is likely to be highly optimized for Sony’s gaming ecosystem, potentially enhancing the visual experience for future PlayStation consoles and PC titles.

What’s Next?

AMD has hinted that this collaboration is just the beginning. With AI-driven upscaling becoming the norm, future developments in FSR technology could further refine image quality and performance, making high-fidelity gaming more accessible across various platforms.
