Apple’s $4,999 Pro Display XDR 2 to Get Quantum-Dot Tech

Apple’s latest M4 MacBook Pro models come almost unchanged from their predecessor but that’s not a bad thing as the company remains consistent at making sure all its devices feel updated.

Not long after the launch, however, Apple was discovered to have secretly updated the display of the M4 MacBook Pro models—a twist that nobody saw coming at all since it wasn’t even mentioned in any rumor highlights or reports beforehand. Now, it is believed that Apple’s upcoming next-generation Pro Display XDR may also feature quantum-dot display implementation like on the new M4 MacBook Pro models.

The display analyst said that Apple is going to replace the Pro Display XDR module with the benefit of quantum-dot into a bigger majority than it has at once. The release date is yet unknown, however, given Young’s history we can expect it soon. According to Young, the quantum-dot display films will provide much greater color gamut support and superior motion performance over the KSF phosphor film currently in use in today’s Pro Display XDR and previous MacBook Pro models. Such an improvement could contribute to better color accuracy and faster responsiveness in the new Pro Display XDR.

An upgrade has been due since the original Pro Display XDR first launched more than five years ago, and the introduction of quantum-dot tech and nano-texture to reduce reflections looks like an appropriate progression. This model currently has a 6K resolution LCD panel with LED backlighting and up to 1,600 nits of brightness. It still only has a 60Hz refresh rate, though perhaps another area Apple will choose to enhance.

The Pro Display XDR will cost $4,999 without the optional Pro Stand priced at another $999. Apple could lower the price with an announcement but this seems very unlikely. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has speculated that Apple might launch an updated version of the Pro Display XDR with an Apple Silicon chip, similar to the less expensive Studio Display, which uses an A13 Bionic chip to support features like Center Stage, spatial audio, and Siri voice commands. However, details on the release of the upgraded Pro Display XDR remain scarce.
