In a new report from the South China Morning Post, a woman in Shanxi, China, suffered serious burns when her iPhone 14 Pro Max allegedly exploded overnight while she was sleeping. The woman, who had her phone charging nearby, was rolling over to get back into bed when the incident happened at about 6:30 AM. Speaking on the local program Hui Bang Mang on Shanxi Radio and Television, she suffered severe burns when she accidentally touched her phone.

The woman was awoken by smoke and flames, and the iPhone was incinerated. Kaur’s apartment was left blackened with damage, including the walls and a burnt bed. At the time of the explosion, the 2022-purchased iPhone was out of warranty. Initial inquiries indicate a battery failure may have triggered the incident. After being alerted, Apple’s customer service expressed concern and stated that they needed to get the phone back for further examination, even though the warranty had expired.

The woman is looking for answers and wants to be compensated for her injuries but also for her rented house that was damaged. As of now, it is not known if the phone battery was original or was replaced in earlier repairs, which might have compromised the battery. Apple has had its say, though, which is to say that the company maintains it will look into any concerns about product safety.
