The IPL Governing Council has announced as part of a batch of new rules that foreigners withdrawing from the competition after selection will face a ban. These players will not be allowed to register for the auction in the subsequent two seasons.
One of the cases of this happening was Mark Wood, who is contracted with LSG at a price of INR 7.50 crore, pulled out of IPL 2024, citing workload management. The new rules would prevent Wood from registering in the auction for 2025 and 2026.

Earlier this year in July, the rule was agreed upon by the owners of the various franchises in the league. Although these withdrawals may be for personal reasons, they force the teams to draw up emergency plans and reinforce their squad by having to select from a much smaller talent pool.
The Governing Council has also announced that up to six players can be retained by each team. However, at least one of them has to be an uncapped player.
Moreover, the teams have also had their budgets expanded to ₹120 crore, 20% more than last season. It now remains to be seen how the cost to build a squad compares to last season.
