In what could be a big change, Apple apparently won’t use 60Hz displays in its iPhone 17 series According to industry insider Ross Young—who has since deleted the tweet—both the standard iPhone 17 and ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air are expected to feature 120Hz refresh-rate displays. All of Apple’s new phones are moving to high refresh rates, a massive change for the company as it previously reserved the feature for Pro models.

iPhone 17 Series to Come with 120Hz Display

As of now, Apple’s regular models have a 60Hz refresh rate while only the Pro ones feature a 120Hz ProMotion display which can go down to as low as 1Hz. The iPhone 17 Air proves that Apple is future-proofing its LTPO OLED panels which provide variable refresh rates Compatible with the low-persistence nature of current displays. BOE, a Chinese display maker could be the supplier of those panels.

In addition to display quality enhancements, the lineup of the iPhone 17 series will undergo a change with the Plus model being removed with the iPhone 17 Air. Starting the Air model at a price lower than that of an iPhone 15 Plus, likely around $899, would firmly position the new device as a slim and light offering.

The iPhone 17 Air won’t be a flagship model but will serve as a stylish option between the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models, appealing to users who prioritize aesthetics without the premium features of the Pro lineup.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumored to receive additional display enhancements, possibly including an under-display Face ID system that would minimize the front camera cutout size, akin to high-end Android devices. The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in late 2025, continuing Apple’s pattern of incremental yet significant upgrades across its devices.
