Starfield Shattered Space: A Deep Dive into a Haunted Planet

Bethesda Game Studios has released an official deep dive video for Starfield Shattered Space, narrated by Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb, along with key developers.

This highly anticipated expansion introduces players to a mysterious and isolated world, with a focus on clash combat, horror elements, and an intricately crafted environment that contrasts with the open-world feel of the base game. In this article, we’ll explore the major highlights of the Shattered Space expansion and what fans can expect.

A Singular Planet: Va’ruun’kai

One of the most exciting aspects of Starfield Shattered Space is its focus on a single planet, Va’ruun’kai. While Starfield is known for its massive, galaxy-spanning gameplay, this expansion takes a different approach by centering its narrative around the isolated homeworld of House Va’ruun.

From the moment players land, they are immersed in a story that stays confined to this planet. Although exploration beyond is possible, the deep storytelling and world-building are firmly rooted in Va’ruun’kai’s mysteries.

House Va’ruun: A Self-Contained Faction

The story of Shattered Space revolves around the mysterious House Va’ruun, a faction known for its isolation. The Va’ruun people have distanced themselves from the rest of the Settled Systems, making them the perfect faction to explore in this contained narrative.

Everything the player discovers, from missions to hidden locations, adds layers to the understanding of how House Va’ruun survives after being cut off from humanity and the disasters they face.

The Vortex Incident: A Tragic Backstory

Central to the expansion’s plot is the Vortex Incident, a terrible event that occurred just before the start of the game. A failed experiment involving Grav-Drive technology ripped a hole in space-time, swallowing much of Dazra, the capital of House Va’ruun.

The player arrives only weeks after this disaster, where the aftermath is raw, the city remains in ruins, and the political climate is tense. The chaos is clear as players uncover the truth behind the Vortex and its impact on the people of Va’ruun.

Political Turmoil and Power Struggles

In the absence of Anasko Va’ruun, the leader of House Va’ruun and Speaker for the Great Serpent, political factions within the Va’ruun society are vying for control. The expansion promises a layered political narrative, where players will become involved in a power struggle among the minor Houses. Decisions made by the player will ultimately shape the future of this isolated faction, adding depth to the role-playing experience.

A New Visual Identity for Va’ruun’kai

Visually, Va’ruun’kai presents a striking contrast to anything seen in the base game. The planet’s alien landscapes and eerie atmosphere emphasize the expansion’s themes of isolation and mystery. Gravity anomalies, celestial features, and the distinct architecture of Dazra City create a unique and immersive environment for players to explore, all while grappling with the consequences of the Vortex.

Increased Focus on Melee Combat and Horror

Starfield Shattered Space also introduces a shift in combat dynamics. While the base game focused on long-range firefights, this expansion brings players closer to their enemies.

The horror elements are more prominent, with terrifying creatures from beyond reality breaking through the weakened fabric of space-time. These Vortex Horrors create tense, unpredictable combat scenarios, forcing players to adapt to more aggressive and chaotic encounters.

The Fate of House Va’ruun in the Player’s Hands

As players explore Va’ruun’kai and unravel the mystery of the Vortex, they will also be faced with critical decisions that affect the future of House Va’ruun. Whether siding with political factions or uncovering dark secrets, every choice shapes the outcome of the story.

The expansion provides a richly detailed narrative, with high stakes and consequences that resonate throughout the gameplay. Starfield Shattered Space launches on September 30 for PC and Xbox Series S|X.
