Sanath Jayasuriya, renowned for his explosive batting and significant contributions to Sri Lankan cricket, steps into the coaching role following the resignation of Chris Silverwood. Silverwood’s departure came on the heels of a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign where Sri Lanka managed only a single win and failed to progress beyond the group stage.

The series comprises three ODIs and three T20Is, promising thrilling encounters between the two cricketing giants. The specific venues for these matches are yet to be finalized, but the excitement is already building among fans and players alike.

From Consultant to Interim Head Coach

Before this new appointment, Jayasuriya was serving as a consultant for the Sri Lankan team during the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean. Despite having no prior high profile coaching experience, his extensive cricketing knowledge and leadership as a former captain and chief selector have earned him this crucial role. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO, Ashley De Silva, expressed confidence in Jayasuriya’s ability to guide the team, highlighting his wealth of international cricket experience.

Jayasuriya’s tenure as interim head coach is set to last until the end of Sri Lanka’s tour of England in September 2024. This period will be critical for Sri Lanka as they seek to rebuild and strategize for future success. The SLC will continue its search for a permanent head coach during this interim period, exploring both local and international candidates.

Jayasuriya’s Legacy and Impact

Sanath Jayasuriya is a celebrated figure in cricket history, known for revolutionizing the role of the opener in ODI cricket with his aggressive batting style. His career statistics are impressive, with 13,430 runs in 445 ODIs and 6,973 runs in 110 Tests. Beyond his playing career, Jayasuriya has served as a chief selector and cricket consultant, bringing a wealth of experience and strategic insight to his new coaching role.
