Mauricio Pochettino has been eyed as a replacement at both Manchester clubs, in a bid to return to Premier League football again. The former Spurs manager is out of contract since his sacking in October 2019. And now, he could potentially have not one but two options for a top job at powerful clubs. The attacking style of play that the Argentine manager deploys saw him achieve little success at both Espanyol and Tottenham Hotspur.
When one looks at United, there stands a manager that has shown good progress but ultimately thwarted by frustrating draws and open weaknesses leading to a sense of vulnerability. It could be a combination of players and manager’s tactics, but the fact of the matter is United fans are fast losing patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and demand results from the club. Last weekend’s 6-1 defeat to Tottenham earned him a whole lot of criticism.
But across the town, a few miles away lies a curious situation altogether. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has not shown any signals of wanting to sign a contract extension. The Catalan manager is now in his 5th season at City – the most he has been at any club in his career. Signs have started to show that the sheer dominance and gripping nature of the team’s gameplay are starting to sour and stale a little as well.
In which case, the City board are monitoring Pochettino as an ideal candidate to take Pep’s job, should he decide to leave the Etihad Stadium in the 2021 summer. City do know for a fact that Pochettino has experience managing a top club and has delivered much with far less resources. So it is set to be an interesting narrative as both Manchester clubs could step into a battle with each other, albeit this time off the field.
