Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and AMD have been championing the idea of an “AI PC” in anticipation of AI-driven features coming to Windows. While Microsoft hasn’t fully disclosed its AI strategy Intel has outlined the requirements for OEMs to develop an AI PC emphasizing the need to include Microsoft’s Copilot key.
More About Intel Revealing about Microsoft
Microsoft is seeking collaboration with OEM partners to provide a blend of hardware and software components for their vision of an AI PC. This includes features like a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) the latest CPUs and GPUs access to Copilot and integration of the Copilot key. As a result certain laptops such as Asus ROG Zephyrus featuring Intels Core Ultra chips but lacking the Copilot key do not meet Microsoft’s standards for an AI PC; however, Intel still recognizes them as such.
Todd Lewellen from Intel highlights their focus on Core Ultra processors along with Copilot technology and the inclusion of the Copilot key in partnership with Microsoft. While Intel closely aligns with Microsoft’s goals, some systems may not have the key. Incorporate Intels integrated NPU. Both companies anticipate that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will gradually adopt Microsoft’s specifications over time. Dell displayed Copilot stickers at CES, suggesting that Microsofts key feature could have been included.
The benefits that OEMs might receive for following Microsoft’s AI PC requirements are still unclear. Microsoft has not disclosed any details on this matter yet. They did mention the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 models which are customized for business purposes as AI PCs. Intel is expanding its AI PC acceleration program to attract software developers interested in integrating AI-driven features. They are reaching out to developers through an AI PC developer program. Will organize events and provide a hardware development kit for experience.
The focus on developers is aimed at incorporating NPU hardware into applications. Currently, a few apps make use of NPU capabilities within Windows. Intel is also encouraging hardware vendors to optimize and enable their hardware for AI PCs. This competition intensifies with Qualcomm preparing to launch Snapdragon X laptops for Windows on Arm.
Google has optimized its Chrome browser for Windows on Arm to enhance user experience. There are speculations, about Microsoft transitioning to Arm for Surface devices. Microsoft is set to host an AI and Surface event on May 20th, where CEO Satya Nadella will share the company’s plans for AI technology and software.
