The iPhone 15 series introduced notable variations compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus featured a Dynamic Island, enhanced cameras, and a slightly improved rear design. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max incorporated a novel feature called the Action Button, a customized button catering to various functionalities. Although the Action Button is a recent addition, Apple is already planning a redesign for the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models.
More About the iPhone 16 Pro Prototype
A prototype of the iPhone 16 Pro, showcasing a redesigned Action Button, has been revealed by MacRumors. Apple has been refining the designs of both the Action Button and Volume Button for its upcoming ‘Pro’ iPhone models. It’s important to note that the specific implementation by Apple is not yet known. The company is not only experimenting with the design of the Action Button but is also exploring the possibility of unified Volume Buttons. According to reports, Apple has tested four prototypes with distinct button layouts:
- Smaller Action Button with unified Volume Buttons.
- Large Action Button with a new Capture Button and unified Volume Buttons.
- Large Action Button with Capture Button and separated Volume Buttons.
- Small Action Button with a flush Capture Button and separate Volume Buttons.
The current focus of testing involves the last option, where Apple intends to retain the existing layout while introducing a new Capture button that seamlessly integrates with the frame of the iPhone 16 Pro. The company has also examined various positions for the Action Button. However, since these details are still in the testing phase, they are part of Apple’s Project Bongo. This project initially aimed to introduce haptic buttons to the iPhone, a feature initially rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro models but was abandoned due to quality concerns.
The initial plan for the iPhone 16 Pro included haptic buttons alongside a single elongated Volume Button. Another prototype explored an enlarged Action Button positioned too close to the Volume Buttons. In the latest “Proto2” design, Apple maintains the same size for the Action Button as in the iPhone 15 Pro but is contemplating the addition of a capacitive Capture Button for camera-centric functions. The actual appearance of the button remains uncertain.
Given the months remaining until the iPhone 16 Pro’s launch, Apple has ample time for further testing of button layouts and additional features. As the device progresses towards mass production, more details about the buttons and the overall design are expected to emerge.
