Let’s have a look into more details : BCCI’s T20 World Cup Watchlist
With just six months remaining for the T20 World Cup, the BCCI Selection Committee, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, is set to shortlist a pool of 25-30 players during IPL 2024. This approach mirrors the successful strategy employed for the ODI World Cup, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of potential candidates.
Among the shortlisted players, the spotlight will inevitably fall on stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. These seasoned campaigners, absent from T20 action since the 2022 World Cup, will be closely monitored throughout IPL 2024. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is even slated to travel to Cape Town to discuss this strategy with head coach Rahul Dravid.
Contrary to earlier plans of imposing match limits on shortlisted players, the BCCI has decided to adopt a more flexible approach. The focus now is on creating a larger pool, allowing for adaptability in case of injuries. This shift in strategy reflects the BCCI’s commitment to ensuring a robust and injury-resilient squad for the T20 World Cup.
To guarantee the fitness and readiness of the shortlisted players, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) physios and the BCCI medical team will closely monitor their performances during IPL 2024. The NCA will collaborate with IPL franchises to manage player workloads effectively.
In a bid to counter potential injuries, the BCCI selectors plan to construct a significant pool, ensuring at least two players are available for every position. This strategic move allows for like-for-like replacements, maintaining the team’s balance in various scenarios.
The BCCI Selection Committee, facing the challenge of finalizing the T20 squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, will engage in crucial discussions. This includes talks with key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have expressed eagerness to participate in the T20 World Cup.
