Designed to break performance records among the most powerful desktop and workstation CPUs, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX boasts an impressive 96-core count and extended memory support. It swiftly surpassed the 100,000-point mark in Cinebench R23, showcasing its prowess. Beyond its massive core count, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro has an additional ace up its sleeve—overclocking capability.

All About the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX

This overclocking capability has proven to be quite substantial, as demonstrated by SAMPSON, a U.S.-based overclocker who successfully pushed all 96 Zen 4 cores of the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX to an impressive 4.80 GHz. The overclocking feat took place on an Asus Pro WS TRX50-Sage WiFi motherboard within AMD Labs. However, achieving such a high frequency comes at a cost—the monstrous workstation CPU, operating at 4.80 GHz on all cores, consumes around 1000W. This surpasses the tolerance level for many workstation manufacturers due to the extensive cooling requirements.

By default, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX operates at 2.50 GHz and can boost one of its cores to 5.10 GHz with adequate cooling. Achieving a 4.80 GHz frequency on all cores represents a remarkable 92% overclock. This significant overclocking effort allowed the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX to set several records in various versions of Cinebench benchmarks:

  • Cinebench R23 — 4.791 GHz — 161,259 Points
  • Cinebench R20 — 4.816 GHz — 61,538 Points
  • Cinebench R15 — 4.875 GHz — 23,697 Points

These achievements mark the breaking of ‘the overclocked multi-thread performance world record,’ according to AMD. However, the article suggests the need to explore how such a substantial overclock of a multi-core CPU influences performance in other benchmarks.

Notably, the 4.80 GHz clock speed on the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX was achieved with an air cooler—specifically, the IceGiant ProSiphon Elite, featuring four fans and a heatsink weighing 1440 grams. While the article raises curiosity about the potential noise level of such a cooling solution, it acknowledges that it effectively accomplished the task at hand.
