Samsung Galaxy Book 4: A Potential Challenger to Apple’s MacBook Dominance with Intel’s Meteor Lake Processors

Apple made a significant breakthrough by introducing its own M series processors for laptops and desktop computers. By shifting from Intel’s x86 chips to their ARM-based in-house design, they achieved not only enhanced performance but also notably extended battery life for laptops.

The Upcoming Samsung Galaxy Book 4

While Samsung’s Galaxy Book 3 laptops deliver impressive performance, they fall short of Apple’s latest MacBooks in terms of battery life. However, this could change in the near future. It is highly probable that the upcoming Galaxy Book 4 laptops will utilize Intel’s Meteor Lake chips. Recently, Intel unveiled the Meteor Lake series for laptops, marking a significant departure from their traditional processor design.

Similar to AMD and Apple’s current chips, these Intel Meteor Lake processors feature chiplets with various components (CPU, GPU, NPU, and I/O) on the same chip, allowing independent activation and deactivation of these components. Furthermore, these chips utilize Intel’s new Intel 4 (7nm) semiconductor fabrication technology.

Meteor Lake chips represent a substantial shift in Intel’s processor design and architecture, the most significant in over four decades. Intel Core Ultra chips are expected to provide improved performance and battery life, with the Compute tile boasting highly efficient CPU cores and an NPU optimized for tasks like Generative AI. This marks the first inclusion of an NPU in an Intel processor. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has expressed confidence in these new platforms, stating they are competitive with the best offerings from Mac and other companies.

Intel Meteor Lake processors also offer native support for ray tracing and HDMI 2.1. These high-end processors feature dedicated GPU and I/O tiles, including the Xe LPG GPU with eight Xe cores supporting ray tracing and XeSS graphics upscaling technology. The I/O tile incorporates features like integrated Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, PCIe Gen 5, and Thunderbolt 4. Notably, Thunderbolt 5 is not included in these upcoming chips.

Intel plans to launch the Meteor Lake chips on December 14, with laptops based on these chips expected to be announced around the same time. This suggests that Samsung could release Galaxy Book 4 laptops with some of these chips in the first quarter of 2024. These chips are well-suited for Galaxy Book laptops and have the potential to offer improved battery life and enhanced performance compared to existing Galaxy Book laptops.
