Intel disclosed a 288-core CPU as part of its ‘Sierra Forest’ range for high-density servers at its Innovation 2023 event this week, in addition to a wealth of details regarding future consumer products. Sierra Forest, Granite Rapids, and Clearwater Forest will also be compatible with the company’s new Birch Stream platform, which will incorporate the LGA 4710 and LGA 7529 sockets.

The dual-chiplet Intel SKU will have 144 cores on each die, for a total of 288 cores and 288 threads.

It will compete with AMD’s EPYC Bergamo CPUs, which have up to 128 Zen 4C cores, and Ampere’s 192-core AmpereOne processors, which were also introduced earlier this year. According to Tom’s Hardware, Intel may potentially launch a tri-chiplet SKU with a mind-boggling 432 cores, although whether that is technologically feasible remains to be seen.

Intel also stated that its 5th-generation Xeon processor family, codenamed ‘Emerald Rapids,’ will be available on December 14. It will be backwards compatible with the current Eagle Stream platform and will have some intriguing advancements over its predecessor.

According to the business, a supercomputer targeted for AI workloads would be built exclusively with its Xeon processors and 4,000 Gaudi2 AI hardware accelerators. Stability AI, the artificial intelligence-driven visual art business behind the Stable Diffusion generative AI model, will be the primary customer for this machine.
