Boost Clock	5.5 GHz	5.7 GHz
Cache	36MB L3	64MB L3
TDP	125W	170W
Manufacturing	3nm (TSMC)	4nm (TSMC)
Overall Benchmark Score	91/100	92/100

Nearly Dead Even, But Different Strengths

These two chips trade blows almost evenly overall, but the way they win differs. The Core Ultra 9 285K leads in single-core performance and power efficiency, drawing significantly less power (125W vs 170W) while staying competitive. The Ryzen 9 9950X pulls ahead in multi-threaded work thanks to its higher core count and larger cache, making it the stronger choice for heavy rendering and simulation workloads. For gamers specifically, both are outclassed in pure FPS by AMD’s own 3D V-Cache chips like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, so these two are best suited to mixed productivity-and-gaming builds rather than dedicated gaming rigs.

FAQs

Q1. Which CPU is faster overall, 285K or 9950X?
They’re nearly tied, with the 9950X scoring marginally higher (92 vs 91) on aggregate benchmarks.

Q2. Which chip is more power-efficient?
The Core Ultra 9 285K, with an 18.1 performance-per-watt score versus the 9950X’s 13.6.

Q3. Which is better for content creation and rendering?
The Ryzen 9 9950X, thanks to its 16 full cores, 32 threads, and larger 64MB cache.

Q4. Are either of these good gaming CPUs?
Both are capable, but AMD’s own X3D variants with 3D V-Cache outperform them specifically in gaming.

Q5. What’s the thermal difference between them?
The 9950X runs at a higher 170W TDP versus the 285K’s 125W, so it typically needs more robust cooling.
