For budget-to-mid-range desktop builds, Intel’s Core Ultra 5 245K and AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600X are the two most talked-about chips right now. Here’s how they compare on specs and real-world performance.

Intel Core Ultra 5 245K vs AMD Ryzen 5 9600X: Overview

Spec	Core Ultra 5 245K	Ryzen 5 9600X
Cores/Threads	14C/14T (6P+8E)	6C/12T
Boost Clock	5.2 GHz	5.4 GHz
Cache	24MB L3	32MB L3
Memory Support	DDR5-6400	DDR5-5600
TDP	125W	65W
Multi-Core Edge	~47% faster (Cinebench)	~12% faster single-core

Efficiency vs Raw Core Count

The Ryzen 5 9600X’s 65W TDP makes it a far more power-efficient chip for its class, and it edges out the 245K in single-core Geekbench results. But Intel’s 14-core hybrid design gives the Core Ultra 5 245K a substantial multi-core lead, making it the stronger pick if your workload includes video editing or heavier multitasking alongside gaming. For most pure gaming builds on a budget, the two trade blows closely enough that pricing and platform cost (AM5 vs LGA1851 motherboards) should be the deciding factor.

FAQs

Q1. Which CPU is better for gaming on a budget?
Both perform similarly in gaming; the Ryzen 5 9600X has a slight single-core edge, but the difference is marginal in most titles.

Q2. Which chip is more power-efficient?
The Ryzen 5 9600X, with a 65W TDP compared to the Core Ultra 5 245K’s 125W.

Q3. Is the Core Ultra 5 245K better for multitasking?
Yes, its 14-core hybrid design gives it roughly a 47% lead in multi-core Cinebench testing.

Q4. Do these chips need a new motherboard?
Yes, the 245K requires an LGA1851 board and the 9600X requires an AM5 board, so factor platform cost into your decision.

Q5. Which CPU offers better value for a budget PC build?
It depends on regional pricing, but the 9600X’s lower power draw can reduce cooling costs for budget builds.
