Sony Introduces PlayStation Portal: A $200 Remote Play Device Set to Debut Later This Year

In March, following the initial announcement of their handheld concept named Project Q, Sony formally unveiled their remote-play handheld device known as the PlayStation Portal. The key feature of this device is its utilization of PS Remote Play, a technology that allows you to engage in PS5 gaming sessions from virtually anywhere, as long as a Wi-Fi connection is available. For smooth functionality, the PS Portal necessitates a minimum internet speed of 5Mbps.

However, Sony advises a speed of 15Mbps for an optimal and seamless gaming experience. It’s important to note that the PS Portal exclusively supports playing games that are compatible and installed on your PS5 console. Additionally, Sony clarifies that the device won’t be compatible with PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming, and local playback of other games or media won’t be possible either.

The PS Portal is equipped with an 8-inch LCD display that boasts 1080P resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz. It mimics the controller layout of the PS5 DualSense, ensuring familiarity and ease of use. Practical elements include a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and speakers placed on the top portion of the device. While comprehensive specifications are still undisclosed at the moment, these confirmed features set the stage for an intriguing release.

Curiously, the PS Portal doesn’t feature Bluetooth connectivity, opting instead for support solely through Wi-Fi and PlayStation Link. The latter is an innovative wireless connectivity standard introduced by Sony, promising low-latency lossless audio transmission and swift switching between compatible devices. This technology is set to be integrated into Sony’s upcoming Pulse Explore wireless earbuds ($200/€220/£200) and Pulse Elite headset ($150/€150/£120), both slated for launch later this year.
