West Ham United have reached an agreement with Stuttgart to sign Greek defender Kostantinos Mavropanos on a permanent transfer. The 25-year-old mainly plays as a centre-back but can also play right-back if needed.

Mavropanos will be joining for a fee worth €20 million upfront plus €5 million in add-ons. 10% of the fee will be going to Arsenal, whom he played for in the past.

He joined the Gunners in 2018 and was loaned out to Nuremberg in 2020. The defender was then moved on to Stuttgart on a two-year loan deal until 2022, when he made his move permanent with the Bundesliga club. After making 89 appearances for them over three years, he will now be returning to England with West Ham United.

The Europa Conference League winners have sprung to life in the transfer window, after first selling Declan Rice and Gianluca Scamacca. They have now signed James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Kostantinos Mavropanos. The Hammers are also in talks with Mohammed Kudus of Ajax and have managed to keep Lucas Paqueta amidst interest from Manchester City.

They were in the market to sign Harry Maguire from Manchester United and even made a £30 million bid. But, they eventually walked away from the transfer due to the player’s inability to negotiate an exit from United.

Now, they have a new centre-back in Mavropanos and will be looking to secure a top half finish this time around.
