Portal: Prelude RTX takes advantage of NVIDIA’s advanced technologies to enhance performance and improve the gaming experience. Modders Remaster ‘Portal Prelude’ with NVIDIA RTX Remix. ‘Portal: Prelude RTX’ with full ray tracing, DLSS 3 and RTX IO is Available Now, for Free!

Portal: Prelude is a popular unofficial prequel to Portal that was first released in 2008. It features a challenging 8-10 hour campaign with 19 new test chambers, advanced gameplay mechanics, a fully voiced story with non-player characters (NPCs), and more. It received high ratings and was recognized as one of the top mods of 2008.

Portal: Prelude RTX is a community remaster of the original mod, created with NVIDIA RTX Remix. It incorporates full ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 3, NVIDIA Reflex, and NVIDIA RTX IO to deliver an enhanced experience for GeForce RTX gamers. This remaster is unique because it was entirely created by modders using the RTX Remix creator toolkit.

NVIDIA worked with the original creator of Portal Prelude, Nicolas “NykO18” Grevet, and modder David “Kralich” Driver-Gomm to modernize the game’s assets and introduce stunning full ray tracing. The remastered version is powered by NVIDIA RTX Remix, a modding platform built on NVIDIA Omniverse, which allows modders to create and share RTX mods for classic games.

It features cutting-edge graphics technologies, including full ray tracing, new high-resolution textures, and enhanced high-poly models. The modding team of five spent eight months upgrading every frame to achieve these impressive visuals.

NVIDIA DLSS 3, NVIDIA Reflex, and NVIDIA RTX IO bring significant performance improvements to Portal: Prelude RTX. DLSS 3 provides an average 5X performance upgrade at 4K with maximum settings, enabling smooth gameplay with 80+ FPS for users of GeForce RTX 4080 and 4090. NVIDIA RTX IO reduces texture load times by 5X and requires 44% less disk space.

NVIDIA RTX IO, which leverages the GDeflate compression standard developed by NVIDIA, enables rapid GPU-based loading and asset decompression in Portal: Prelude RTX. It works with both the DirectX and Vulkan APIs, with the game utilizing the new Vulkan Extensions.

To support the release of this Prelude RTX, NVIDIA released a new GeForce Game Ready Driver optimized for the game. This driver also enhances performance in other titles, such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and takes full advantage of NVIDIA RTX IO and DirectStorage for Windows.

In addition, NVIDIA’s graphics card partners will be offering 16GB versions of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, starting this month. The 16GB version performs similarly to the 8GB version in most games, but certain games may benefit from the extra VRAM. The latest driver update also supports the new 16GB versions.

The driver update includes various improvements and additions, such as support for upcoming games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Remnant II, support for new G-SYNC Compatible displays, and optimized settings for seven new games in GeForce Experience.
