You no longer have to say “Hey Siri”, just say Siri from iOS 17

The rumours of this news circulated before the WWDC 2023 event, and surely in iOS 17, Apple is making a notable change to Siri’s trigger phrase by replacing “Hey Siri” with simply “Siri.”

You can just say Siri from iOS 17 instead of “Hey Siri”

This modification aims to streamline the process of summoning the virtual assistant on various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This shift follows a previous report from Bloomberg in November, which indicated that Apple was working towards adopting a single wake word for Siri.

Previously, Apple employed the phrase “Hey Siri” as the trigger due to the technical ease and training involved with a two-word phrase. However, transitioning to a single wake word represents a significant change, despite its apparent simplicity. For instance, Amazon allows users to activate Alexa using either “Hey Alexa” or simply “Alexa.” Microsoft also supported the use of just “Cortana” as a wake word before discontinuing its voice assistant on iOS and Android in 2021.

On the other hand, Google Assistant still relies on phrases like “Hey Google” or “OK Google” rather than a single wake word like “Google.” If Google were to adopt a single wake word, it would need to carefully address situations where the assistant might mistakenly activate during conversations that involve the word “Google.” Given Google’s pervasive presence in online search, the word has even become a transitive verb.

The updated trigger phrase for Siri is expected to be available starting this September with the launch of iOS 17.
