Luis Enrique has been ruled out of the race to become the new Chelsea head coach. The former Spain national team coach has been out of a job since after the World Cup.
He was one of the leading candidates to take over the West London club alongside former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann. But, both of them are now out of the running after failing to agree with the board on crucial matters.
Luis Enrique no longer in talks to join Chelsea
Initial reports suggested that Enrique had impressed the directors at Chelsea with his plans. But, they were not willing to meet the demands that he made in later conversations with them. And as a result, they have cooled their interest in him and are looking at other candidates.
One of the main reasons why Luis Enrique was a preferred option was because of his history of managing big names. He also won the treble with Barcelona, and is no stranger to silverware either. But Chelsea’s current project would have required him to work with and promote young talent in the side.
And considering that the Blues want a coach to lead them into the future for the long-term, it could have been one of the points that the pair differed on. For now, talks are accelerating with Mauricio Pochettino, who is one of three names on the shortlist.
Pochettino has a history of promoting young talent and getting the best out of them, like he did at Tottenham. And it seems likely that he will be the next Chelsea head coach at this juncture.
